Born in Aomori Prefecture in 1950, he was inspired to begin his creative path after being captivated by the works of the 19th-century netsuke master Ozaki Kokūsai. In 1996, he began studying ivory carving techniques. Deeply influenced by Kokūsai as well as the Buddhist sculptor Mokujiki, his work came to express warmth, approachability, and a generous sense of form through softly rounded shapes.
In 2013, he adopted the artist’s name Dōsai. Known for a gentle and lighthearted style that resonates with everyday life, his works convey a relaxed, open sense of freedom. In recent years, he has expanded his creative range to include pieces inspired by kabuki theatre.
