Dragon Kite

Dragon Kite

龍凧

Kites bearing the character for “dragon” (ryū) are considered auspicious, symbolizing a dragon ascending to the heavens and the wish for success and advancement in life. In this work, the design appears as a dragon illustration, but when turned over, it forms the body of the dragon.

The proverb “A dragon shows signs of ascending to the heavens even when only one sun long” expresses the idea that truly exceptional people display their potential from an early age. This piece also reflects hopes for the bright future of the child flying the kite.

Artist

Touran Shishido

宍戸 濤雲

Born in Chiba Prefecture in 1960, he originally worked in precious metal craftsmanship. After encountering netsuke, he became fascinated by the ability to carve and decorate every surface in 360 degrees, and began creating works in 1997. His style is characterized by precise realism combined with stylization and anthropomorphism, and he values carving a deeply imagined motif in a single, focused flow. Blending classical subjects with a contemporary sensibility, he continues to pursue a unique form of expression.
