Born in Shizuoka Prefecture in 1957, he was engaged in research in natural science and biology before beginning his work in netsuke, and also created hands-on exhibitions designed to be experienced through touch. By turning his attention to the natural environment surrounding Mount Fuji, he developed a deep respect for nature and came to feel a strong connection between living creatures and the concept of engi (auspicious connections).
Drawing on his experience with hands-on exhibitions, he was drawn to the unique tactile appeal of netsuke and began creating his own works in 2009. Reinterpreting engi in a contemporary context, he focuses on themes that highlight the depth of nature and encourage a renewed appreciation of Japanese cultural values.
