About Netsuke – Traditional Japanese Craftsmanship
Netsuke are traditional Japanese ornaments that originated during the kimono era (688–1704). They were used as fasteners to secure small personal items such as inrō (medicine cases), kinchaku (pouches), and tobacco containers to the obi (sash), preventing them from slipping off.
Distinguished by their practical design, netsuke feature a cord hole that allows them to be attached securely. Over time, they evolved from simple functional tools into exquisite miniature sculptures, balancing utility and artistry.
